AI visibility intelligence

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

GEO should be measured as a before-and-after system, not sold as a ranking promise.

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of improving how clearly and credibly a company can be understood, retrieved, cited, and recommended across AI answer surfaces. It overlaps with SEO, content strategy, entity clarity, digital PR, and technical accessibility, but it needs its own measurement layer because AI answers are not ordinary search-result pages.

GEO and SEO are related, not identical

Search visibility still matters because AI systems may rely on public web information, retrieval layers, and sources that are themselves influenced by strong search fundamentals. GEO adds another question: when buyers ask an AI system who to choose, what does that system actually say and what evidence does it expose?

Start with a baseline

Before changing content or authority signals, define the market and buyer-intent questions, measure current answers across configured providers, record competitors and citations where available, and keep failed runs visible. Without a baseline, later improvement claims are difficult to verify.

Improve entity clarity

A company should be described consistently across its own site and credible external sources: name, product category, canonical domain, publisher, capabilities, and supporting evidence. Structured data can help machines interpret those relationships, but markup should reflect real public information rather than invent authority.

Build useful public evidence

Strong first-party methodology, case studies, original research, comparison criteria, documentation, and clear product pages give search engines and retrieval systems more verifiable material to work with. Independent references and legitimate customer evidence can strengthen that public graph further.

Avoid GEO shortcuts

Fabricated reviews, fake citations, doorway pages, mass-generated low-value content, and purchased mentions may create noise without creating durable trust. Promptence treats evidence quality and provenance as part of the measurement problem rather than optimizing only for a headline visibility score.

Remeasure the same demand

After approved changes are implemented, measure the same governed buyer-intent set again. Compare the new provider-specific observations with the baseline, report the delta, and keep causality claims narrower than the evidence supports.
